*Congratulations to Val Wilson for her win of the gift package (a GDLF coffee mug, bookmark, and tea towel) from our table raffle!

A newly opened teen facility at the Gibsons Public Library earned immediate approval from its target demographic. Youthful participants from the library’s summertime Comic Camp crowded into the renovated lounge at the moment of its inauguration on July 26.

“This place,” said a patron surveying shelves stacked with young adult fiction and manga novels, “is every kid’s dream.”

The project was funded by the Gibsons and District Library Foundation. In 2023, the non-profit organization received a bequest from longtime Gibsons resident Joe Peters. A portion of Peters’s legacy was used to amass the approximately $30,000 necessary to reconstruct, furnish and equip the space.

“Libraries were special to him and he wanted to be able to support libraries into the future,” said foundation chair Elaine Jackson. “We thought this was a way of doing that because there aren’t a lot of places for teens in Gibsons.”

In addition to books curated by the library’s child and youth services coordinator Pippa Rogers, the teen lounge includes a supple sofa, bean bag chairs, and a wood-grained homework desk. Art supplies, games, and charging units for electronics will be added in the weeks ahead.

“Our library is constantly evolving to meet the aspirations and needs of our community, and we have wanted to create a welcoming, comfortable place for youth for many years,” said library director Heather Evans-Cullen. “I am thrilled that young people have such a lovely free space to relax, socialize, create and study.”

The Board of the Gibsons & District Library Foundation is pleased to announce the launch of our new website. The website will serve as an information hub where members of the public can learn about our upcoming events, the history and achievements of the Foundation, and how to get involved in supporting our local library.

Creating a website of this scope involved significant effort on the part of our volunteer team: identifying what we needed, advertising the project, reviewing applicants, bringing the selected web developer up to speed, providing lots of information, and taking photographs. After the web developer created the site, we reviewed it carefully for accuracy.

We encourage fans of the Gibsons & District Public Library to bookmark our website and check back periodically to see how you can support the library.

We have been very fortunate to have received a substantial bequest from Joe Peters in 2023. We are so grateful to Mr. Peters for considering the Gibsons & District Library Foundation as a recipient of these funds.

One of Joe Peters’ passions in life was books. He was a lifelong learner who valued the endless resources available to him at the Library. He also loved people and appreciated that our Library is a lively community hub. These passions were the inspiration behind his generous legacy to the Foundation.

Part of this generous bequest will be used to finance the Youth Area Enhancement Project. His generous gift will help provide a space for youth to relax in a comfortable setting exploring what the library has to offer.

The balance of Mr. Peters’ bequest will be invested to keep on giving into the future for projects, programs and services the Library requires funding for and will continue to enhance core funding for the Library and enrich the community.

Excerpt from Article:

The public library in Gibsons is using high tech to lower the barriers to book borrowing. A self-serve loan locker was activated this week at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre, allowing library patrons to reserve items online and collect them from the popular civic hub.

The distribution system was purchased using over $38,000 raised by the nonprofit Gibsons and District Library Foundation.

The Gibsons and District Public Library accumulated seven years of feedback that suggested its downtown location — at the base of a steep hill — was an impediment for some visitors. The library’s board of directors identified remote accessibility as a priority for its three-year strategic plan.

The project is the latest to be realized through investment from the Gibsons and District Library Foundation. The standalone organization was established in 2000 with funds remaining after the library’s construction. Its budget is supplemented through bequests and fundraising campaigns.

The Library Foundation’s first fundraising initiative in almost a decade is rapidly coming to a close. To date over $4,500 has been raised but the final push is on to achieve the goal of $6,500.
